The Great Left Over Tile Coaster Project

So! I have left over white tiles from my table project (I know I'm not actually done with my Great Mosaic Table Project, but whatever) and I thought I would make coasters out of them and experiment with different tile painting options. First, I have this spray-paint type stuff. It's actually spray-latex, so i think it'll stick better to the ceramic. Second, I got this paint on porcelain kit from Michaels.

The tiles are a little big (4.5 x 4.5). I would recommend using smaller tiles for this project.

For this tile, I'm going to use the Spray Latex I got at Michaels for $5. I'm going to use some tape to mask certain areas of the tile I don't want to get covered.
It's really packaging tape but I'm using it to mask parts of my tile. It says
Of course, I recommend doing this outside in a well-ventilated area.
Experiment, the first.
Masking tape, get it?
Outside
I sprayed my tile. I learned that you should stand back a ways for even coverage because it comes out thick and possibly gobby. But! If you make a mistake you can wash it off for up to 20 minutes after you spray it.
A bug got stuck to my tile.
Hoorah for me! I recommend tracing the tape with a safety pin or something before you peel it off because the latex has a tendency to pull with the tape. Also, touch up with a wet cotton swab if you need to.
Sprayed!
Poor Bug
Trish!
It looks pretty good and dried nice and hard after like, 20 minutes. It says wait an hour before handling though.
This is the porcelain painting kit that I got from Michaels. It comes in bottle form and pen form so I will try both and see which one works better.
The porcelain paint starter kit came with a VHS for some tips. But I don't have a VCR!
Done!
Experiment, the second
VHS?!
My friend is going to help me with one of the tiles. She gets the bottled paints.
What is that? A pig with wings flying over the ocean?? Weirdo.
Ok, so mine isn't exactly the sanest looking tile either. I'm using the pen.
Bottled Paints
Flying Pig?
Blood Fish
I decided the fish were a bad idea and I used cotton swabs to erase the fishy parts. Now they're just decorative dots.
I commandeered my friend's tile as it was sinking deeper and deeper in to weirdness (and ugliness).
Here they are painted and ready to bake. The look like a set!
Abstract Dots!
Star!
Lovely!
Bake (starting with a cold oven) for 35 minutes at 300 degrees.
Let's see what they look like!
Here they are! The paint color doesn't change at all after baking!
Into the oven!
Ready?!
Yay!
They look a little bit like what a second grader would bring home. But! I think they look cute. You can stick little felt pads on the bottom so they don't scratch the table. I think you could experiment with simple stripes or other patters for a classier look. Again, I wish the tiles weren't so big.
Coasters!
