Comic Book Style Poster Art

Mmyes, well then! I've been wanting to try this project out for a while now, but never got around to it. But today's the day! I've always been a fan of graffiti art, comic book art and stencil art (have you seen my paintings?), and this is a really simple project does a good job of getting the aesthetic qualities of those styles, without being much an artist. Cutting out rectangles and squares is not hard. The hardest part of this project was the helicopter and that was not very hard. So, let's go!

Just because I don't like to jump into things without showing you what I'm trying to accomplish, here's my initial sketch.
Supply list: Junk mail, scissors or knife, double sided tape (get the temporary stick kind! otherwise it'll rip the poster underneath), poster board, spray paint.
How to make a building: fold a piece of junk mail in half, and cut out squares for windows. I don't want the lines of the building to be perfectly straight and have 90 degree angles, but if you want, you can use a ruler and a marker for guides.

Building done! This is what it looks like when all the windows are cut out and it's unfolded.
For this building, I didn't bother folding it in half, I just cut it and started cutting out windows.
However, you can fold the windows over like this and use them as a guide for the second row of windows. Or you can do it all by hand.

More cutting techniques
I start laying out my posterboard. To get an idea of how big my buildings need to be.
To make an overlapping effect (have some buildings behind other buildings), I just cut out part of the building to match the corner of the front building. In this case, I just used the same piece of paper and spaced it a part a little bit.
I just did this by hand. I don't know if this is an accurate representation of a helicopter. Also, don't be afraid to cut this out in pieces, you can just tape them together.

So this is what we have so far. I did a Google Image Search on cityscapes to get different ideas for buildings and different window styles.
I wanted it to say something. I went through different revisions and finally settled on this. I didn't cut out the H, why? Because there is no H! I did Spanish because I thought it gave my poster some culture.
Now use that double sided to tape to tape everything down. We don't want things flying off when you're spraying it.

Tape it down
Make sure you don't get any thing sticking up like this or paint will get underneath it.
I just put this old table cloth down so I don't get spray paint everywhere.. I don't go outside. I blog and make arts & crafts.
I wanted the spray paint to kind of fade out at the top, so I sprayed heavier towards the bottom.
Tape thoroughly!

So this is what happens when you forget to tape a corner down, just so you know.
Wait about, oh, 15 minutes, then start peeling away! Carefully, so you don't rip the posterboard. Then put it somewhere and marvel at you're cool art.
Forgot to tape
Marvel at your art! (get it? it's a pun)!
