Ice Cream in a Bag!

So, if you know anything about me, you would know I am a huge ice cream freak. I generally stick to the Chocolate Chip varieties (Baskin Robbins, of course being my favorite), but I have been known to step out a little bit, and try other things. Generally, I don't like fancy ice creams with a lot of sweets and ingredients... usually too filling.

Ah! Anyway! So, ice cream in a bag. One of the more bitter things about my high school experience was that I was looking forward to this one day in Chemistry class where we studied endothermic and exothermic reactions and we made ice cream in a bag. I was super excited but then when the day came, I, for some reason, missed it. I don't remember why I missed class... sick? Denist appointment? I dunno. All I know, is that I've been carrying that resentment with me for years and years, and now I will set things right.

Also! Sorry this isn't really a "craft" project. But you know, it's a do-it-yourself project. I'm going to make three flavors: mango, strawberry, and my fave, chocolate chip.

Let's see, now. I've got milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extra, ice and salt. For my flavors, I've got mangos, strawberry syrup, frozen strawberries, and chocolate shavings from my Williamson and Sonoma Gourmet Hot Chocolate mix! Other things: baggies and a blender.
For the base of all my ice cream, I'm going to use this mixture: 1 cup whole milk, 1/4 cup cream (it's supposed to be ice CREAM, you know), a teaspoon of vanilla, and two tablespoons of sugar.
I like these little yellow mangos as opposed to the big green ones. They're usually softer and sweeter.
Ingredients
Creamy base
Mangos!
Little chunks make it easy for blending. If you want smooth ice cream, I suggest puree the mangos first.
I blended the mangos with the cream. For good measure, after I blended, I threw in some more chunks for extra flavor pockets of mango goodness! If you're just making plain vanilla flavored ice cream, you don't need to do any blending.
Now for the strawberry flavored one! I didn't put as much sugar in the milk/cream mixture because I thought I'd put some Nesquick strawberry syrup in for coloring and taste.
Little Chunks
Blend
On to Strawberry!
I threw in some frozen strawberries and blended this mixture in the blending machine as well.
Last but not least, I make my chocolate chip batch. No blending here since I want the shavings to remain in tact.
Now pour each mixture into little baggie and seal. This is me sucking out any excess air-it helps! You missed seeing pictures of me, didn't you?
Frozen Strawberries
Chocolate Shavings
Seal Baggie
Here's another picture of me! I am pouring some salt into a gallon sized bag filled about half way through with ice. I didn't really measure, no, but I'd say each ice cube was coated well enough.
Put the ice cream baggie in the big baggie and begin the shaking.
Shake for 5 to 10 minutes to 15 minutes...
Ice and Salt
Shake!
Continue shaking!
After a while, you will feel the ice cream thickening. And when you spoon it out it looks like this!
Serve in a bowl!
The mango is a little melty.. I tried to do these two in the same bag. But still good! No worries!
It worked!
Serve and eat!
Serve more and eat more!
